On Sunday, June 22, 2025, tragedy struck the heart of Syria’s Christian community. What was meant to be a sacred gathering of worship and peace turned into a scene of bloodshed and heartbreak. A suicide bomber entered the Saint Elias Church in the Dweil’a district of Damascus during the Holy Mass and detonated an explosive vest, killing and injuring scores of innocent believers.

According to witnesses, the attacker opened fire inside the church before triggering the bomb. The explosion tore through the sanctuary as hymns and prayers filled the air, transforming a house of God into a place of devastation. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that around 20 people were killed and 52 more were injured in the attack. Among the victims, local sources suggest, were children—small hands lifted in worship, lives ended too soon.

Blood stained the pews. The cross stood amidst the rubble, a silent witness to the suffering of Christ’s followers. Yet even in the face of this cruelty, the Christian community stood firm in their faith, echoing the words of Job: “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:21)

The blast marks the first major attack on a Christian church in Syria in several years and has shaken a nation already wearied by war and loss. But for the faithful, this is not the end of the story. Martyrs’ blood has always been the seed of the Church. In the face of such evil, the Church remembers Christ’s own suffering—and clings to the promise of resurrection.

Today, we mourn the precious lives lost at Mar Elias. We pray for the wounded, for the grieving families, and for the children who will now grow up without parents. And we pray for those who persecute us, that they may come to know the Prince of Peace.

Let us raise our voices not in vengeance, but in faith. Let this act of terror be met with even greater love and courage. May the world remember the names and faces of those who died not just as victims, but as witnesses to the light of Christ.

Lord, have mercy on Syria. Lord, comfort Your people. Lord, be near to the brokenhearted.
