The persecution of Christians in India has seen a troubling escalation in 2024, with reports indicating a sharp rise in both arrests and attacks. According to India’s United Christian Forum (UCF), the first half of the year witnessed 361 incidents targeting Christians across the country.

The surge in anti-Christian activities can be attributed to several factors:

Anti-Conversion Laws: False Accusations

Twelve of India’s 28 states have now implemented anti-conversion laws, which are ostensibly designed to prevent forced conversions but are often used to harass and persecute religious minorities. These laws have led to hundreds of arrests, with nearly 400 Christians detained in Uttar Pradesh alone since the law’s implementation three years ago.

Many of those arrested, particularly Protestant pastors and church members, face charges of forced conversion despite a lack of substantial evidence. These accusations are frequently used as a pretext for violence and discrimination against the Christian community.

Regional Hotspots:

Certain states have emerged as particularly dangerous for Christians:

Uttar Pradesh: Recorded the highest number of incidents at 275, leading to arrests of pastors and believers.

Chhattisgarh: Witnessed 132 incidents of coordinated attacks, along with unreported cases of forced reconversions to Hinduism.

Haryana: Despite Christians making up only 0.02% of its population, the state saw 44 cases of targeted violence.

The rising hostility has had severe consequences for Christians in India:

• Threats and harassment (201 cases)
• False accusations and arrests (146 instances)
• Attacks on Christian homes doubled to 180
• Christian fatalities increased ninefold to 160
• Attacks on churches and Christian schools rose from 67 to 2,228

Factors Driving Persecution

The escalation in anti-Christian sentiment is primarily attributed to the rise of Hindu nationalism, often referred to as Hindutva. This ideology, which equates Indian identity with Hindu religion, has gained significant traction in recent years.

International Concern:

The situation has drawn attention from international organizations. The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has called for the repeal of anti-conversion laws and for India to be designated as a country of particular concern.
