In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 2, 2025, Fulani Islamic extremists carried out a brutal attack on a Christian village in Ebonyi State, southern Nigeria, leaving at least 16 dead. The attackers stormed the village, shooting indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze, adding to the grim toll of Christian persecution in Nigeria.

Fulani extremist attacks have been concentrated in Nigeria’s northern and central regions. However, this assault in Ebonyi points to a worrying expansion of the violence into the country’s southern regions, where such attacks have been less frequent.

According to the members of the Lord Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministry, “the attack occurred after several days of threats were made following accusations that villagers had killed cattle belonging to the Fulani herders.” Which was just an excuse to attack the Christian Community.

State Reaction:

However, the Nigerian Government has failed to protect the Christians from Islamist groups such as Fulani, Boko Haram, And ISIS. However, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru condemned the attack and said security forces had been deployed to search for the killers.

Moreover, these statements mean nothing; in reality, Nigeria has become the most dangerous country in the world, where, almost every day, Christians are targeted and killed. Even there is a growing concern among the Christians of Nigeria that the Government and some of their institutes are supporting and favoring these terrorist groups.

In the past, Nigeria has witnessed relentless attacks on Christians over the past decade, with thousands killed by various extremist groups. Between June 2015 and February 2020 alone, an estimated 11,500 to 12,000 Christians were murdered. The primary criminals include:

• Jihadist Fulani Herdsmen: Responsible for over 7,400 Christian deaths.
• Boko Haram: Accountable for approximately 4,000 Christian deaths.
• Bandits and Highway Kidnappers: Have killed an estimated 150–200 Christians.

International Reaction and Calls for Action

The worsening crisis has drawn global attention, with human rights organizations and religious freedom advocates calling for decisive international intervention.

Some proposed actions include:

• Increased pressure on the Nigerian government to protect Christian communities meaningfully.
• Strengthening security cooperation between Nigeria and international partners to combat extremist violence.
