Germany has taken decisive action against the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH) and its affiliated mosques, citing concerns over radical Islamist activities and connections to Iran and Hezbollah. The German Interior Ministry announced the ban on Wednesday, following extensive raids on 53 properties across eight German states, including Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin.

The Ban:

Radical Islamist Goals: The IZH has been accused of promoting an Islamist-extremist, totalitarian ideology that contradicts democratic values, human dignity, and women’s rights. The organization is alleged to support Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group classified as a terrorist organization in Germany since 2020.

The German authorities claim that the IZH acts as a representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and aims to instigate an Islamic revolution in Germany similar to Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

Aggressive Antisemitism:

The German Interior Ministry has accused the IZH of disseminating aggressive antisemitic views, which form a core element of its ideology. This includes promoting hostility towards Jewish people and the State of Israel.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized that the IZH’s activities are not merely religious but are deeply intertwined with extremist political goals, including the spread of antisemitism.

The raids, conducted early Wednesday morning, targeted 53 properties and resulted in the closure of four Shiite mosques associated with the IZH. These actions are part of a broader crackdown on extremist activities in Germany. The IZH’s assets have been seized as part of the ban.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized that the ban targets extremist activities and not the peaceful practice of the Shiite religion. “This ban does not apply to the peaceful practice of the Shiite religion,” she stated, clarifying that Shia Muslims are still free to practice their faith in Germany.

The IZH, which operates one of Germany’s oldest mosques in Hamburg with a distinctive turquoise exterior, has been under surveillance by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency for an extended period.
