With recent political shifts in Bangladesh, religious persecution has increased, particularly against Christian and Hindu communities. Following the government’s fall, Islamist factions have leveraged the power vacuum, escalating their calls for restrictions on minority religions and stirring anti-minority sentiments.
Historically, Bangladesh has maintained constitutional guarantees for religious freedom, allowing a diverse religious landscape that includes significant Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian minorities. Yet recent shifts in the political structure have led Islamist factions to exploit the situation, aiming to restrict religious freedoms for these groups.
The Islamist pressure group Hefazat-e-Islam has used its influence to intensify anti-minority narratives, leading the attacks on Hindus and Christians, and now has called for bans on groups like the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), an international Hindu organization commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement. According to Christians in Bangladesh, it is not far off when Christian churches will face similar actions.
After the Fall of the government in Bangladesh, not only the extremist Muslims have attacked the Christians and Hindus but also the Military and Police as well. Social media is full of these videos; here are a few clips.
This targeted hostility emphasizes a troubling trend in Bangladesh, where members of minority faiths increasingly face accusations, social hostility, and violence, often with little legal recourse. According to recent reports, in 2023, Bangladesh was ranked as the 30th most difficult country for Christians, reflecting growing challenges for religious minorities across the country.
ISKCON Under Fire: Allegations and Response
The recent call for banning ISKCON has served as a lightning rod, sparking national and international concern about the destruction of religious freedom in Bangladesh. Leading the campaign, Hefazat-e-Islam has labeled ISKCON an “Anti-Hindu militant organization,” and Mahmudur Rahman, editor of the newspaper Amar Desh, added his voice to these allegations. Accusations against ISKCON include claims of promoting an “anti-Sanatani” agenda and instigating violence against Muslims and officials—charges that ISKCON officials staunchly deny.
ISKCON has publicly condemned these accusations as baseless and harmful, asserting that the organization has no affiliation with any anti-Muslim activity and works solely to promote peace and cultural exchange. ISKCON has demanded a formal apology from Rahman, stressing that such allegations defame the organization and undermine Bangladesh’s social harmony.
Some reports indicate that social hostilities and violence have been increasing, often backed by hardline Islamist groups. Religious minorities face harassment, threats, and violence, with limited support from authorities. In recent years, the level of religious hostility in Bangladesh has been cited as among the highest globally, raising concerns about the nation’s commitment to protecting its citizens’ rights regardless of faith.
Please pray for peace in Bangladesh and remember the religious minorities in your prayers and thoughts. As they face rising challenges and persecution, let us stand in solidarity with them, advocating for their safety, freedom, and dignity. Together, we can hope for a future where harmony and justice prevail.
