Modern slavery still exists, and the story of Tania and her family reveals the brutal realities faced by many enslaved laborers in brick kilns in Pakistan. Their journey from desperation to liberation sheds light on the critical work of our organizations fighting against human trafficking and exploitation.

Tania, the eldest of four siblings, worked alongside her family at a brick kiln under increasingly oppressive conditions. Their suffering began when her father, David Masih, fell ill with liver disease. Desperate for medical treatment, the family took out a substantial loan from the kiln owners, unknowingly entering a cycle of debt bondage.

Father’s Death: The Horrors of Abuse in the Kiln

Despite their efforts, David succumbed to his illness, leaving the family devastated and deeply in debt. The kiln administration seized this opportunity to exploit the vulnerable family further, forcing them into what amounted to slave labor. They were denied rest even when ill, and women and girls faced constant harassment and abuse.

The situation took a horrific turn when Tania was violently raped by the kiln owner’s son and his friends. Threatened with false blasphemy accusations – a charge that carries severe consequences in the region – Tania and her family felt powerless to seek justice.
