On August 24, 2024, the town of Barsalogho in central Burkina Faso became the site of one of the deadliest attacks in the country’s recent history. The massacre, carried out by the Islamist group al-Qaeda-linked with Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), resulted in the deaths of more than 200 people and left over 300 injured. It is so heartbreaking that the Christians in Burkina Faso have been facing Persecution from Islamic groups for the last decade.
The Attack by the Islamists:
The attack began at 9:00 AM local time and lasted until 4:00 PM. JNIM militants targeted groups of Christians who were digging defensive trenches around security outposts. Most of the victims were women, children, and young residents who had volunteered to assist soldiers in securing the area.
Many of the people were found dead in the very trenches they had been digging, which tragically became mass graves. The Islamists also seized weapons and an ambulance used by the Burkinabe military and para-medical staff.
Context And History of Insurgency :
The Barsalogho massacre is part of the ongoing jihadist insurgency in Burkina Faso, which started in 2015. This terrorism has led to the displacement of over 2 million people and claimed at least 10,000 lives. The attack on Barsalogho is particularly significant due to its location:
Barsalogho is strategically important. It is about 40km north of Kaya and is considered the last defensive line before the capital, Ouagadougou. Over the years, Islamist groups have controlled half of Burkina Faso’s territory. Al-Qaeda-linked militants control this entire region.
In response to the attack, Burkinabe soldiers, auxiliaries, and air support intervened, reportedly killing several militants and preventing an even deadlier assault. The government has vowed a “determined response” against the terrorists responsible for the massacre.
However, the incident highlights the ongoing challenges Burkina Faso’s military government faced, which came to power through two coups in 2022. The junta has struggled to contain the violence despite seeking new security partnerships with Russia and other conflict-affected countries in the Sahel region.
Since October 2022, the government has been recruiting civilian auxiliaries, Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDPs), to support military efforts against Muslim insurgents. However, this strategy has also made civilians potential targets for militant groups.
Regional Impact and Alliances : Humanitarian Crisis
The security situation in Burkina Faso is part of a broader regional crisis. In September 2023, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger formed the Alliance of Sahel States, a mutual defense pact. In March 2024, the three countries announced the creation of a joint force to combat Islamist armed groups.
The ongoing conflict has had severe humanitarian consequences; over two million people have been forced to be displaced from their homes. More than 6,100 schools have been shut down since 2021. The worst part is that these Islamist armed groups have besieged cities, towns, and villages, blocking food and humanitarian aid.
This is a Time for the world’s leaders and Organizations to stand in solidarity with the innocent people of Burkina Faso.
