Today we stand at the foot of the Cross. We gaze upon the suffering of our Savior Jesus of Nazareth, crucified not for His own sins, but for the sins of the world. As He hung between heaven and earth, suspended in agony, He spoke seven powerful Words. These are not merely words of a dying man, but prophetic declarations, fulfilling centuries-old Holy Scripture, and announcing the heart of God’s redemptive plan.

Let us reflect upon these Seven Last Words of Christ, not just to remember His suffering, but to deepen our faith, our hope, and our gratitude for the finished work of the Cross.

1. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”  Luke 23:34

 Prophecy Fulfilled: Isaiah 53:12 – “He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.”

The first word is a prayer Jesus intercedes not for His friends, but for His enemies. As the nails pierce His hands and feet, He pleads for those who crucify Him. This is divine love in action. This is the High Priest interceding before the Father, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy that He would “make intercession.”

2. “Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”  Luke 23:43

Prophecy Fulfilled: Isaiah 53:9 Though “assigned a grave with the wicked,” He was “with the rich in His death.”

The repentant thief receives a promise of eternal life, which shows the immediacy of salvation to all who believe. The King, though crucified, still holds the power to grant entrance to Paradise. This word confirms the Messiah’s authority over life, death, and eternity.

3. “Woman, behold your son… Behold your mother.”  John 19:26-27

 Prophecy Fulfilled: Exodus 20:12 – “Honor your father and your mother.”

Even in suffering, Jesus fulfills the law perfectly. He honors His mother by entrusting her to John, the beloved disciple. This reveals Jesus’ humanity and His concern for those He loves. It also teaches us to care for one another, as the Church is born at the foot of the Cross.

4. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”  Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34

Prophecy Fulfilled: Psalm 22:1 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Jesus quotes Psalm 22, a messianic prophecy written 1,000 years earlier. In this moment of pain, He experiences the spiritual weight of our sin and the abandonment sin causes. Yet even in despair, He calls God “My God,” showing His trust remains. Psalm 22 ends in triumph, reminding us that this cry of dereliction leads to deliverance.

5. “I thirst.”  John 19:28

Prophecy Fulfilled: Psalm 69:21 – “They gave me vinegar for my thirst.”

This brief word highlights His physical agony. Jesus, the Living Water, now thirsts so that we, the spiritually thirsty, might never thirst again. In speaking this word, He fulfills Scripture and exposes the cruelty He endured on our behalf.

6. “It is finished.” John 19:30

Prophecy Fulfilled: Daniel 9:24 The atonement for iniquity is accomplished.

In Greek, Jesus said, “Tetelestai,” meaning “Paid in full.” The debt of sin is canceled, the sacrificial system is fulfilled, the serpent is crushed, the veil is torn, and redemption is won. This cry is not of defeat but of victory. The mission of the Messiah is complete.

7. “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”  Luke 23:46

 Prophecy Fulfilled: Psalm 31:5 “Into your hands I commit my spirit.”

 With His final breath, Jesus surrenders His life, which was not taken from Him but freely given. He trusts the Father fully. This word of submission reminds us of His obedience even unto death. In His surrender, we find salvation.

The Cross: Where Prophecy, Love, and Salvation Meet

Each word from the Cross is a thread in the great Message of redemption, merged from the promises of the Old Testament, fulfilled in Christ Jesus. He was the Passover Lamb, the Suffering Servant, the Sin Bearer, the Redeemer.

Let us not only consider these sayings, but live in the power of what they accomplished.

Forgiveness is offered. Salvation is assured. The mission is finished. And the Spirit is entrusted to the Father.

Let us now take up our cross, follow Him, and declare with our lives:

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.”
