In a heart-wrenching case from Sheikhupura, Punjab, Pakistan, the plight of a Christian family has brought to light the severe issues of human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and religious persecution. This tragic story revolves around Munir Masih, a laborer and father of eight, who is desperately seeking justice for his daughters.

The Abduction and Exploitation of Salma:

Munir Masih’s family was shattered when his mentally ill daughter, Salma, aged 17 was abducted by Umer Khatri, a Muslim man from the same town. What followed was a horrifying series of events that no family should ever have to endure.

Salma was not only abducted but was also subjected to brutal rape by Khatri for several days. Her nightmare did not end there; she was sold to another man, where she faced further abuse. This cycle of exploitation continued, with Salma being sold five times in total. The final sale was to an elderly Muslim man in Hafizabad, who continued to assault her until her condition worsened significantly. When Salma’s health deteriorated beyond repair, the man contacted Munir Masih to take her back.

A Tragic End:

Salma returned home in a dire state, having endured unimaginable torture and assault. Tragically, she died of her injuries and passed away three days later in May 2024. Her death left the family devastated and seeking justice for the horrors she endured.

Continued Threats and Harassment:

The family’s suffering did not end with Salma’s death. Umer Khatri, the initial abductor, continued to harass and threaten the family. His next target was Nisha, aged 16 Salma’s younger sister, who works with her mother as a domestic worker. The constant threats added to the family’s trauma, leaving them in a state of continual fear.

Legal Action and Support:

Determined to seek justice, Munir Masih contacted the police, who registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Umer Khatri. The police have arrested several persons incoulding Umer connected to the network responsible for selling Christian girls as sex slaves.

The family has requested support from the Emergency Committee to Save the Persecuted and Enslaved (ECSPE) in their pursuit of justice. Our organization has pledged to assist the family in their legal battle, with our lawyers and ground team working closely with the police to ensure that justice is served.

This case highlights the vulnerability of religious minorities, particularly Christian girls, in certain parts of Pakistan. It underscores the urgent need for stronger protections, law enforcement, and support systems to prevent such heinous crimes and ensure justice for the victims and their families.
