Recent developments have brought a ray of hope to the tragic case involving the Christian family of Munir Masih in Sheikhupura, Punjab, Pakistan. Following immense pressure from Our organization (ECSPE) and the Christian community, law enforcement has taken decisive action against Umer Khatri and his associates, who were implicated in a human trafficking racket.

Under the supervision of DPO Sheikhupura Bilal Zafar Sheikh, the police have arrested several individuals involved in the abduction and trafficking of Christian girls to brothels across Punjab.

Umer Khatri, Arslan Aka Gonglu, Tahira Bibi, Tariq Shaukat, Ehsan Noor Muhammad, Faisal Saif Ullah, and Zaman Ali, along with his wife, were arrested. The district court remanded these people to police custody for further investigation.

According to Akhtar Bhatti, a member of the ECSPE team, the police are actively working to recover more victims. They are preparing to submit a comprehensive report at the next court hearing.

Background of the Case:

This case began with the abduction of Salma, a mentally ill 17-year-old girl, by Umer Khatri, a Muslim man from the same town. Salma was subjected to brutal rape and was sold multiple times, enduring severe abuse before being returned to her family in critical condition. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries in May 2024, leaving her family devastated.

Ongoing Threats and Legal Action:

Even after Salma’s death, the threats did not cease. Khatri continued to harass the family, targeting Salma’s younger sister, Nisha, who works as a domestic worker. Munir Masih lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Khatri, which led to the arrests.

The family has sought support from the Emergency Committee to Save the Persecuted and Enslaved (ECSPE) to aid in their legal battle. The case highlights the vulnerability of religious minorities in Pakistan and the urgent need for stronger protections and justice systems to prevent such crimes and support victims’ families.
