Christian persecution in Nigeria has reached alarming levels, mainly in the northern and central regions of the country. Among the most brutal extremists are Fulani jihadist herdsmen, whose violent activities have claimed countless lives. In a series of recent attacks in Agatu County, Benue State, these herdsmen slaughtered 38 Christians during July and August of 2024, according to local reports. The violence in Agatu is part of the ongoing persecution that has made Nigeria the most dangerous country in the world for Christians.

16,000 Christians Murdered in Four Years:

Over the past four years, more Christians have been killed in Nigeria than in the rest of the world combined. A staggering 16,000 Nigerian Christians were killed during this period, highlighting the extreme danger facing believers in the region. The Fulani herdsmen, along with other Islamic extremist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP (Islamic State in West African Province), have intensified their attacks, mainly targeting Christian communities.

The most recent attack in Agatu County occurred on 23 August 2024, when Fulani militants raided the predominantly Christian villages of Iwari and Olegagbane. The attackers killed six people and left many others injured, adding to the growing toll of Christian lives lost in the region. In addition to the loss of life, the herdsmen also set fire to homes, displacing thousands of villagers. Phillip Ebenyakwu, chairman of the Agatu Local Government Area Council, confirmed the ongoing violence, noting that over 2,000 displaced villagers are now living in deplorable conditions in makeshift camps.

Humanitarian Crisis:

The situation in northern and central Nigeria is dire for Christians, who face relentless persecution. According to Open Doors, an international Christian advocacy organization, more believers are killed for their faith in Nigeria each year than anywhere else in the world. The violence has escalated in recent years, particularly during the presidency of Muhammadu Buhari, placing Nigeria at the epicenter of targeted attacks against the Christian church. The international community has expressed concern over the escalating violence, but effective action to protect Christians in Nigeria remains elusive.

As the crisis deepens, the resilience of Nigeria’s Christian communities is being severely tested. The ongoing attacks have not only resulted in significant loss of life but have also left a deep psychological and social impact on the survivors.

Many Christians in these regions live in constant fear, unsure if their villages will be the next target. The need for urgent intervention and support from the international community is critical to prevent further atrocities and to provide much-needed relief to those who this relentless persecution has displaced.
