The report, 2024 World Watch List by Open Doors International, has brought to light a concerning trend that ranks the top 50 countries where Christians face the most severe persecution, highlighting the growing challenges faced by Christian communities globally.

Rising Persecution in Africa:

Africa has seen a dramatic escalation in violence against Christians, with Nigeria being one of the most affected countries. In Nigeria, Fulani militants have carried out horrific attacks on Christian communities. For instance, during a series of attacks from April to June 2023 in Plateau State, more than 340 people were killed, and 80,000 were displaced. These attacks targeted 54 villages, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life.

Global Statistics:

The report reveals that more than 365 million Christians worldwide face high levels of persecution and discrimination, an increase from the previous year’s figure of 360 million. This means that one in seven Christians globally is experiencing significant persecution, up from one in eight just three years ago. The World Watch List has documented a near doubling of countries where Christians face extreme, very high, or high levels of persecution, from 40 countries in 1993 to 78 countries in 2024.

Church Closures and Attacks:

China and India have been identified as the worst offenders regarding church closures and attacks. In China, approximately 10,000 churches were closed due to a combination of old and new authoritarian measures. In India, aggressive mobs have attacked 2,228 churches, with significant violence reported in the Manipur region. Other countries with high numbers of church attacks include Angola, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Niger, Rwanda, and Sudan.

Persecution in Nicaragua:

In Latin America, Nicaragua has seen a rapid rise in persecution, with the government of Daniel Ortega intensifying its repression of religious freedom. The country has moved 20 places higher on the World Watch List. Notably, Bishop Rolando Álvarez of Matagalpa was stripped of his citizenship and sentenced to 26 years in prison for defending civic freedoms
